Outdoor Research is looking for an assertive, well organized and focused Technical Designer Outerwear. This position reports to the Senior Technical Designer Outerwear while working closely with Design, and other members of the Product Development Team.  Applicant must be a self-starter with great problem-solving skills to support and achieve the product development and commercialization of new products and technologies; from design hand off through all phases of development and fit to the final production tech packs


  • Extreme sense of detail and accuracy with proven ability to establish and maintain schedules and deadlines
  • Advanced knowledge of product development for outerwear and manufacturing experience with patternmaking, construction, and fitting
  • User level competencies in OR's core outdoor sports (preferred)
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot potential production issues and to research and identify innovative solutions
  • Previous experience with waterproof taped, bonded outerwear, and down or synthetic insulation
  • Computer literate with ability to use Word, Excel, Outlook, Adobe Illustrator
  • Experience with PDM or related tech pack system
  • General understanding of outdoor products and the outdoor sports markets and trends
  • Degree from accredited apparel design/ development program
  • 3 - 5 years experience in outerwear development and commercialization
  • Excellent verbal and written skills


  • To establish & uphold the OR design philosophy and to execute the designer's direction- Adhere to product performance and corporate branding guidelines established by Head of Product
  • You will coordinate with our design team to bring initial sketches and concepts into technical development
  • Manage over all fit intent, production ready construction and cost-effective construction
  • To critique all proto, sales, & pre-production samples against the tech pack specifications for fit, sewing quality, design accuracy, and functionality; both new, updated and carry over
  • You will lead all fitting and be responsible for the implementation and communication of construction and fit changes
  • Proactively communicate with vendor partners and contractors during the entire development process, working diligently to eliminate errors and costly production delays
  • To manage and complete the development and commercialization of products against the agreed process and timelines on time, in full, and accurate
  • To manage and provide oversight and accuracy on shared, multi-category areas:
  • Fit
    • To follow OR's standard grade rules for all garment types
    • To be knowledgeable concerning appropriate POM (point of measure) selection and usage to drive consistent and achievable fit direction for all garment types
    • Ability to provide guidance and ensure adherence to body spec standards and fit categories
    • Prepare spec report for fittings
  • Color
    • Partner with design to accurately build out color way specifications in all BOM creation areas of detail
  • Other duties may be assigned
